The Importance of Not Being Earnest

Being totally and blindly in love with your project is dangerous. Your vision gets blurred and dusty, and you stop seeing the shortcomings of your beloved product, as well as the new possibilities. The only way out is to put aside your strong face and start treating your project as a fun experiment: “What if I make like that?” or “What if I try this way?”

That’s the trouble of many entrepreneurs — they are too serious about their projects. But a straight face is not a sign of intelligence. All the stupid things on Earth are committed with that straight face. This is what is waiting for any startup if everything’s taken too seriously — stupidity. All the skyrocketing successes happen when we start to wonder, “What will happen if we do this?”

Let’s look at Elon Musk. Is he eccentric? Sure. Super inventive and smart? One hundred percent. Is he earnest? We doubt it. Mark Zuckerberg’s Facebook was initially a platform to compare the photos of Harvard students and decide who’s hotter. Is that an earnest idea? Not at all.
